Nike: Our First Coach

Professional athletes have access to the world’s best coaches but for many of them, their first coach was their father. Whether it was teaching them the sport, carpooling them to practice or screaming from the sidelines, their fathers played a significant role in their journey to becoming champions.

Sometimes fathers go over the top when they show support and are incredibly blunt with their comments, but they often break character from coach to father in the shape of a hug or a high five. Which is why for these athletes, their fathers will always be their biggest fan, harshest critic and greatest teammate.

So this Father’s Day, we got some champions to dedicate a few words to their biggest fans - before they became champions.

Below are the scripts of two TV spots with voice-overs by Nike athletes Naomi Osaka and Andre Agassi, both tennis champions who were coached by their fathers from an early age.

*I’ve always wanted to write a TV spot for Nike and I wrote these based on real experiences with my father during the Covid lockdown of 2020.

Enjoy:)
